Samuel Earl Detwiler

 January 22, 1934     September 2, 2021

     Samuel Earl Detwiler, 87, a resident of Maybrook Hills Rehab and Healthcare Center, Altoona, formerly of Martinsburg, passed away Thursday morning, September 2, 2021 at the center.

     He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late Ross Anthony and Daisy B. (Beegle) Detwiler.  On October 13, 1956 he married Nancy L. Burket in Martinsburg.  She preceded him in death on April 29, 2017.

     Surviving are a daughter, Tammy L. Thompson (Barry Yarnall) of rural Claysburg; a sister, Freda M. Barnes of Indiana; a nephew, George Detwiler (Rose) of rural Martinsburg; and many other nephews and nieces.

     He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, William B. Thompson, who passed away May 16, 2014; three sisters: Leanor C. Yingling, Rosella E. Haney and Lethian D. Haney; and three brothers: Norman E., Kenneth R. and Charles E. Detwiler.

     Sam was a 1952 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg.  He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1956 until 1958, attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

     He was employed from August 10, 1959 until July 31, 1992 at Appleton Papers Inc., Roaring Spring, where he worked as a paper maker, with 33 dedicated years of service.  Sam and his wife, Nancy attended the Martinsburg Brethren in Christ Church.

     Sam loved spending time with his family and also enjoyed hunting, vegetable gardening and raising animals on his family’s farm.

     Friends will be received from 11am until noon, Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, where a funeral service will follow at noon, Pastor Earl Herr and Pastor Kenneth Downs officiating.  Interment with military honors will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

     Memorial contributions in memory of Sam may be given to Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 97, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
