Marjorie Davis Obituary

Marjorie H. Davis

December 31, 1930  ~   March 1, 2023

Marjorie H. Davis, 92, of Martinsburg passed away at home on March 1, 2023, following a brief illness.

Marjorie was born in Tyrone PA on December 31, 1930, the daughter of Walter and Sue Houck.  Walter and Sue moved their family to Martinsburg when Marjorie was young, and Martinsburg became her hometown.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lucille Bryant.  She is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, William F. (Fip) Davis, two sons, Wes (Brenda) of Hummelstown PA and Bill (Lisa) of Martinsburg.  Additionally, she is survived by two grandchildren, Brent Davis (Brenda) of New Paris PA and Gwyneth Davis ( Kate) of Campbelltown PA.  Deerin Davis is her one great granddaughter. She is also survived by ten nieces and nephews as well as Lisa’s daughters Macy and Morgan of Saxton PA.  She held a special place in her heart for her sister Lucille’s sons Dan, Mark and Steve Bryant.

After graduating from Martinsburg High School, Marjorie attended Lock Haven University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education.  She taught kindergarten students for one year in the Williamsport Area School District before returning to her hometown of Martinsburg.  She spent the next thirty-eight years teaching first grade students in the old Benson Elementary School.  She loved teaching and enjoyed the professional collaboration and friendships with so many of the excellent teachers at Benson Elementary.   Her working years were a vibrant, vital and rewarding time in her life. She thrived in the classroom and there was no doubt it was her calling.  Teaching gave her both purpose and fulfillment.  If you asked about her greatest professional achievement, she would tell you she was most proud of teaching hundreds and hundreds of Martinsburg school children their first reading and writing lessons.

Marjorie had a keen memory and a remarkable sense of recall.  Because of that, she was a wonderful conversationalist.   She loved talking to people, learning about their lives, families and kids.  She stored all the information gleaned from those conversations and that served to strengthen her connection to   the Martinsburg community.

Marjorie and Fip were avid walkers and believers in physical fitness.  For the better part of forty years, one could spot them strolling the bucolic streets of Martinsburg on their almost daily walks.

Marjorie attended St. John’s United Church of Christ in Martinsburg for more than 60 years.  She served many years as the secretary of the Martinsburg Community Library Board as well.

Marjorie loved the town of Martinsburg and appreciated the friendships and sense of community that small town living engenders.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and enjoyed a life well lived.

Arrangements are being made by the John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.  Services will be private at the convenience of her family.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Martinsburg Community Library, 201 S. Mulberry St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
