March 9, 1965 ~ November 4, 2023

     Kimberly Sue Stern, 58, of Elkridge, Maryland, formerly of Martinsburg, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at AccentCare Inpatient Hospice Center at MedStar Harbor Hospital - Baltimore, MD after an extended illness.

     She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late E. Roy and Peggy Sue (Shanafelt) Stern.

     Surviving are her aunts, Mary E. Hinish of Curryville, Ethel M. Lingenfelter and husband, Donald, of Bellwood, Marcia K. Reffner and husband Harry, of Bedford, Linda A. Stern of Gainesville, VA, Pamela Shanafelt of Tyrone, and Mary Lou Calderwood; and numerous cousins and close friends.

    She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents: Clarence M. and Jean E. (Coble) Shanafelt; paternal grandparents: Luke K. and Frances L. (Royer) Stern; and four uncles: Richard “Dick” Hinish, Ezra Stern, Newton Stern, Ronald and Melvin Shanafelt.

     Kimberly was a 1983 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg and then went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science as well as a minor in Business from Slippery Rock University. She then obtained a Masters of Health Science Administration from the Medical College of Virginia.

     Kimberly was employed by the State of Maryland as the Director of the Maryland Cancer Registry. She was also a certified Tumor Registrar with the state. Kimberly was of Lutheran faith and found enjoyment with many social, volunteer, and philanthropic causes.

     At a young age and throughout adulthood, she enjoyed travel, camping, and attending the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association Convention with her parents and the Jaffa Shrine Temple Chanters Unit for many years. She made many friends throughout the Shriner community in JAFFA, Boumi Shriners of Baltimore, MD, Kena Shriners, of Manassas, VA, and Nur Shriners of New Castle, DE. Kimberly was an avid supporter of the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Department. She was a member of Zitta Temple No. 27, Daughters of the Nile - Baltimore, MD, as well as a Lace Guild where she made many award-winning lace patterns. Kimberly enjoyed reading, crafts, and various games, which she loved to share with her friends and family.

     Friends will be received 10 am to 12 noon on Saturday, November 18, 2023, with a funeral service directly following at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. Reverend Traci Marriott officiating. A service will also be provided by Daughters of the Nile, Dorcas Temple No. 129, Altoona, PA. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

     Per Kimberly’s request, memorial contributions be given to the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, Jaffa Shrine Temple, Shriner’s Hospital for Children – Philadelphia, or the Marfan Foundation of Port Washington, New York.
