Kathleen Hull Mitchell Obituary

Kathleen Hull Mitchell

December 2, 1926    September 4, 2021

Kathleen Hull Mitchell, 94, of Martinsburg, PA, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2021, at The Village at Morrisons Cove. The oldest of two children, Kathleen was born on December 2, 1926, to the late Ralph E.D. and Belva (Graham) Hull of Westminster, Maryland.

Kathleen graduated from Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA, with a BA in 1946 and received her Library of Science Certificate from St. Francis College, Loretta, Pennsylvania, in 1967. Kathleen worked as Library Clerk for the Martinsburg Public Library from 1962-1971. Kathleen was the Junior High Head Librarian for Spring Cove School District 1967-1971. She helped design the new junior high library and worked to consolidate the two previous junior high libraries. She was Assistant Librarian at Franklin County Library, 1972-1979 and Head Librarian of Franklin County Library 1979-1982. Kathleen both staffed and drove the Franklin County Bookmobile during that period. She completed her working career with the Adams County Library, 1985-1988.

Kathleen married the Rev. Floyd H. Mitchell of Boones Mill, VA, on August 21, 1945. They enjoyed 71 years and 51 weeks of marriage. Together they raised their three sons in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, as Floyd followed the call to serve congregations as pastor in the Church of the Brethren. They retired to The Village at Morrisons Cove in Martinsburg, PA, in 1993.

Kathleen is survived by her son Wayne Mitchell and daughter-in-law Maureen Mitchell of Roaring Spring, PA; son Glenn Mitchell and daughter-in-law Theresa Shay of Spring Mills, PA; son Mark Mitchell and daughter-in-law Heidi Schmidt of St. Charles, IL; grandchildren Nicole and Russ Moll of Pittsburgh, PA, with great-granddaughter Maysen Moll; Shane and Morgan Mitchell of Richmond, VA; Brenton and Morgan Ilgen Mitchell of Boalsburg, PA, with great-grandson Otis Mitchell; and Rebekah Mitchell of State College, PA. Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Floyd, her sister Eleanor Ness and her grandson Shannon Mitchell.

In addition to her love of family, Kathleen enjoyed creating beauty with her hands. Kathleen learned to knit when she was seven years old and her hands were busy creating through all the years that followed. She kept her family in sweaters, socks, afghans, baby blankets, hats, mittens, and prayer shawls. She taught knitting to others wherever she lived. In Martinsburg, her community of knitters founded a prayer shawl ministry that presented hundreds of prayer shawls to others. Kathleen also enjoyed birding, cross-stitch, painting, gardening, cooking, decorating, traveling and reading. She kept a diary throughout her life and loved to send cards and letters to friends near and far. She always found the path to gratitude no matter the challenges she faced.

A private family service will be followed by interment in the Antioch Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Rocky Mount, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Village at Morrisons Cove.
