John “Coonie” Verbonitz Jr.

John “Coonie” Verbonitz Jr., 90, resident of The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, formerly of rural Williamsburg, passed away Tuesday evening, July 31, 2018 at UPMC Altoona.
He was born in Williamsburg, son of the late John Sr. and Barbara (Despot) Verbonitz. On December 23, 1950 he married Doris L. Bumgardner in Beavertown, rural Martinsburg. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2005.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie J. Brumbaugh (Darrell) of Williamsburg; a son, Scott A. Verbonitz (Michelle) of Murrieta, CA; three grandchildren: Charitee and Gabriella Verbonitz and Raychelle Green; and a sister, Wilma V. Clapper of Hollidaysburg.
Coonie attended school in Williamsburg and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in Japan with the occupational forces, attaining the rank of corporal.
He was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren, rural Williamsburg and in 1990 retired from New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Union Furnace Plant, after 34 years of service.
Coonie loved spending time with his family and friends, and also enjoyed woodworking and collecting old items.
Friends will be received from 2-4pm, Friday, August 3, 2018 at the chapel at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg and from 10am until the 11am funeral service, Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Fairview Church of the Brethren, rural Williamsburg, Pastor Eric Fether and Chaplain Linda Banaszak officiating. Interment with full military honors accorded by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Shellytown Fairview Cemetery, rural Williamsburg.
