     Jean M. Ake, 72, of Martinsburg, passed away Friday morning, July 14, 2023 at Hilltop Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Altoona.

     She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late Elmer David and Dorothy J. (Harker) Hammel.  On October 30, 1971 she married Clark M. “Sonny” Ake in Bedford County.  He preceded her in death on January 27, 2013 following 42 years of marriage.

     Surviving are a son, Clark L. Ake (Maxine Higman) of rural Martinsburg; two daughters: Crystal G. Ake (Wade Bellan) of Duncansville and Cheryl L. Bowers (Chris) of rural Martinsburg; four grandchildren: Logan Bowers, Colton Bellan, Brittany Bowers and Hunter Bellan; four sisters: Dorothy Claycomb, Betty Starnes, Patricia Echard and Judy Clapper; two brothers: Roger and Thomas Hammel; and many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Stiffler.

     Jean attended Claysburg-Kimmel High School.  She retired as a shoe stitcher in 2013 from the Cove Shoe Company in Martinsburg, with over 30 years of service.  Jean was a social member of the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg and Morrisons Cove Ray Camp Post 7689 in Roaring Spring.

     She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and also enjoyed scratching lottery tickets and watching The Young and Restless and Hallmark Channel.

     At Jean’s request there will be no public services and a private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.  Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.

     In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the funeral home to help defray expenses.
