Howard I. “Ace” Benner

Howard I. “Ace” Benner, 86, of rural Martinsburg, passed away Monday afternoon, June 20, 2022 , at Homewood at Martinsburg.
He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late D. Ray and Wilma (Guyer) Benner. On October 7, 1961, he married Carol A. Pietro at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Carol of 60 years; a son, Bryan D. Benner and wife, Marina of Hunt Valley, MD; six grandchildren; and a brother, David R. Benner and wife, Sue of Knoxville, TN.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Jean Dauberman.
Ace was a 1954 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. He was a US Air Force veteran serving from 1956 until 1959 attaining the rank of Airman 2nd Class. Following his service to our country, Ace earned a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and also a Master’s degree in education from Penn State University.
He retired from the Spring Cove School District where he taught and served as principal for all the elementary schools. Ace was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Church of Christ, rural Martinsburg and attended the Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg. He was also a member of the Woodbury Lodge 539 F&AM, Roaring Spring and the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg.
Ace served his community as a volunteer fireman and also as a forest fire warden. He loved spending time with his family, Bible study, watching sports, fishing and boating. Ace also enjoyed farming and doing yard work.
Friends will be received from noon to 1 pm, Friday, June 24, 2022 at Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg, where a funeral service will follow at 1pm, Rev. Jerry McCuller Jr. officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery, Martinsburg. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg
