Gerald W. “Bill” Summers

Gerald W. “Bill” Summers, 82, of rural Martinsburg, passed away Saturday morning, September 9, 2023 at his home.
He was born in rural Martinsburg, son of the late Melvin H. and Kathryn R. (Graybill) Summers. On December 2, 1968 he married Susan M. Eisenberger in Winchester, VA. She preceded him in death on February 3, 1998 following 29 years of marriage.
Surviving are a step-son, Donald P. Defibaugh (Dorothy) of rural Martinsburg; three step-grandchildren: Sheri L. Defibaugh, Scott M. Defibaugh and Renee D. Moore (C.J.); four step great-grandchildren: Marshal Leach (Keirsten), Bradan Defibaugh, Oliver Moore and Elsie Moore; three step-great-great-grandchildren: Oaklynn, Irelynn and Rahlee Leach; four brothers: Walter F. (Victoria), Richard A., Charles B. (Peggy) and D. Wayne (Nancy); three sisters: Janet L. Pheasant (Gerald), K. Joanne Defibaugh and Linda M. Ayers (Denny); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Herbert E., Harold M. Ralph G. and John R. Summers.
Bill attended Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg and later completed his G.E.D. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Germany during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Sergeant with the First Division.
He was longtime faithful member of Mount Pleasant Church, rural Martinsburg, where he served as elder and president of the consistory. Bill worked for many years as a self employed building contractor.
Bill loved spending time with his family and also enjoyed hunting and woodworking.
Friends will be received from 6-8pm, Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc. Martinsburg and from 10 until 11am, Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Mount Pleasant Church, where a funeral service will begin at 11am, Pastor Kenneth G. Downs officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery, rural Martinsburg.
