Caroline Roberts King
October 12, 1924 August 23, 2020
Caroline Elizabeth Roberts King, 95, of Martinsburg, PA, formerly of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2020. She was born on October 12, 1924 in a bungalow in Jeddo, PA, to Benjamin Albert and Verna Mae Keller Roberts. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, John W. King MD PhD, sister, Ruth Roberts James, and brothers, B.A. Roberts II & V. She is survived by her sister, Agnes DeHart, and children, John W. King, II (Louise), Christena Hoffman (Duane), Eugene R. King (Nancy), and Mary Kananen (Timothy). She is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Caroline received her RN in 1945 from the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia where she met her husband. In their 50 years of marriage, they lived in Vermont and Texas and settled in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She worked for the visiting Nurses Association in Vermont and St. Vincent Charity Hospital, in Cleveland.
Caroline was a force of nature who overcame lifelong challenges and was enthusiastic, eager to help, never met a stranger, loved to learn new things, eager to make friends in all settings, always made everyone welcome, and showed her love and generosity to everyone. She supported her husband and her children’s activities throughout their lives. She was active in many organizations, especially the Eastern Star, P.E.O. sisterhood, and St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. She loved old houses, antique furniture, and the stories that surround them. She embraced email and the internet to stay connected to family and friends. She was an unafraid tinkerer tackling plumbing and furniture-refinishing and , in her 80’s, tuck-pointed the brick wall surrounding her home. To celebrate her 80th birthday, she rode a horse and helped her son and grandsons build a barn, climbing unsupervised to the second floor to help hold up the rafters.
In 2013, Caroline moved to an independent living apartment at Homewood of Martinsburg where she made many friends and enjoyed water aerobics and volleyball. Her family appreciates everyone at Homewood who welcomed her and included her in their warm supportive community
Due to COVID concerns, the family will hold a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Caroline’s name to the Homewood Retirement Communities Benevolent Fund and to participate in one of Caroline’s favorite activities, “lunch with friends” as often as possible.
