Robert Wagner Obituary

Robert W. “Beanie” Wagner

May 16, 1933      March 30, 2019

Robert W. “Beanie” Wagner, 85, of rural Martinsburg, passed away early Saturday morning, March 30, 2019 at his home, after a long illness of dementia and diabetes.

He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late Elder and Georgianna (Oakes) Wagner.  On February 14, 1953 he married Doris A. Stonerook in Winchester, VA.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, who had been his caregiver during his illness; two sons: Steven (Shirley) Wagner of rural Martinsburg and Kelly Wagner (friend, Betty Smith) of Falls Creek; three grandchildren: Bobby (Heather) Wagner of rural Martinsburg, Amanda (Doug) Rumberger of Martinsburg and Kandace (Jake) Sollenberger of rural Williamsburg; seven great-grandchildren: Anthony, Zachary and Emma Rumberger, McKenna and Mason Wagner and Alyssa and Kaleb Sollenberger; a sister-in-law, Betty Lou Wagner; and a brother-in-law, Alvin Wilson.

Robert was the last remaining member of his immediate family; and he was preceded in death by three sisters: Esta Holsinger, Betty Kanode and Pearle Wilson; and two brothers: Paul and Glenn Wagner.

He was a 1951 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg.  Robert was employed for over 40 years by Blattenberger Electrical, Martinsburg.  After retirement, he transported the Old Order Mennonites, until his health began to fail him.

Robert was a member of Martinsburg Church of God where he served in many capacities, including elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and youth advisor.  One of the church activities he enjoyed the most was traveling with the men from his church as a work group to Haiti,  where they built houses, restored power to those with no electricity, and did many other jobs.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s, he played short stop for the local baseball team in both the Blair League and Blair Twilight League.  He was also a member of Iron Masters Country Club, Roaring Spring, where he enjoyed playing golf with his good friends Ray Zook, Bud Wisler, Elwood Metzler and Jere Over, all now deceased.

Friends will be received from 4-7pm, Monday, April 1, 2019, at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg and from 10 until the 11am funeral service, Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Martinsburg Church of God, Pastor Nathan Starr officiating.  Private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
