John “Jack” Kenneth Hite, 89, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday morning at Homewood at Martinsburg.
He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late Charles W. Hite and Pauline (Mentzer) Bowers. On March 1, 1952 he married Audrey M. Kensinger in Winchester, VA.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years; a daughter, Susan K. (Robert) Matuska of Bloomingdale, OH; a son, Jeffrey K. (Susan) of Leesport; 3 grandchildren: Sarah Grabel, Stephen Hite and Jennifer Hite; 3 great-grandchildren: Kaydin, Jaxin and Kaylyn; and a brother, Gordon L. Bowers of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by a son, John K. “Johnny” Hite II on January 9, 2009.
Jack was a 1945 graduate of Martinsburg High School and a 1950 graduate of Pennsylvania State University where he received his Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering. After graduation he worked as a track supervisor for the Pennsylvania Railroad and then for many years was employed as a civil engineer for Gwin, Dobson & Foreman Inc., Altoona where he retired in 1991. Following retirement Jack served as the Martinsburg Borough Manager for 5 years.
He was a member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg where he taught Sunday school. Jack was also a longtime member of the “Apple Butter Gang” and a member of the Woodbury Lodge #539 F&AM, Roaring Spring where he received his 50 year pin and a 50 year member of the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona.
Jack was an excellent cook, who also loved woodworking and hunting.
Friends will be received from 5-8pm, Friday, August 4, 2017 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg where a masonic service will be held. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Saturday, August 5, 2017 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, Rev. Judith E. Simonson officiating. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Jack can be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 115 E. Penn St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
